THE LAST BOOK!
Okay, so for this book I chose another book that I was going to read this year anyway. I had to wait about a week for it to come out, then hardly read any because I was so busy at work, and finally finished it a couple of days ago. This book is the third part of a trilogy and is titled Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs. The first two books were Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Hollow City.
If you haven't heard of these books, you should look into them. I will admit that I do have mixed feelings about the series but am ultimately glad that I have read them. The trilogy begins with a kid named Jacob and his struggling with the death, murder, of his grandfather. Jacob and his father go on a trip over seas to try to relax and also honor their loved one. While there, Jacob discovers Miss Peregrine and her peculiar children (all orphans). Jacob also discovers that he is peculiar and so was his grandfather.
Fast-forward two books and we have Jacob, along with Emma (another peculiar), essentially fighting an army to save their friends, caretakers, and all of peculiardom. In this third book, Jacob really discovers who he is and has both internal and external struggles as he figures out who he is to become.
I don't want to give too much away since this is the third book, but I will say it was my favorite of the three. The mixed feelings I have with the series is that I feel like each book starts out really slowly. Even when there is action at the beginning, I always find it hard to get through. It isn't until about half way through each story that I get super into what is happening and the reading gets easier. I also had problems with remembering which child was which. I mean who was the invisible boy again? Horace or Millard? It gets confusing even when the characters are active parts of the story (with the exceptions of Jacob and Emma and Bronwyn).
Overall, I think it is a unique story and I really like how Jacob has to adapt to a time period that doesn't have the luxuries he (we) is used to. No cell phones, no GPS, no TV. I honestly don't think that even half of my students could make it a full day without these things. Haha. If this series even sounds remotely like something you might be interested in, check it out. I have a couple of friends who absolutely loved it.
4 Stars.
