If you have read some of the other posts in this blog, you probably know that I am a Kubica fan. I only have one of her books that hasn’t been read, but plan to read that soon, and there has only been one that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy.
In this book we follow Clara, the mother of a four-year-old daughter and a day-old baby boy. In the opening chapter we learn that Nick, Clara’s husband, has been killed in a car accident in which he drove off the road and hit a tree head on. Their daughter, Maisie, was also in the car but escaped, basically, unharmed.
Clara’s life is quickly falling apart. She isn’t working, so money is tight. She is worried about the health and livelihood of her aging parents. She hasn’t told her daughter that Nick is dead, and she is stricken by grief. As all of this spirals out of control, Clara believes that Nick’s accident wasn’t actually an accident and begins to investigate. She is surprised by the things that she uncovers about her husband and ultimately does things completely out of her normal character.
I really enjoyed this book. I really liked all of the mystery and plot twists. I didn’t agree with some of Clara’s actions, and I was left with one burning question, but overall I liked it and would still recommend it. Just like The Woman in the Window, I found this book hard to put down. I am excited to pick up the next Kubica!
